Everyone has one room in the house where they spend most of their time, and this is usually the living room. Whether you like to curl up on the sofa and watch television, play computer games, or just sit about and chat with the family, you want your room to feel relaxing and cosy.
If your living room is cold, it will be uninviting and you'll struggle to relax properly in it. If you lead a hectic life or have a stressful busy job, then these moments to relax are precious and you need to make the best of it. In a cold room you can never fully relax, and it can be embarrassing when your guests keep their coats on in your living room because it is too cold. So what can you do to warm your room up?
Check your windows, are they double glazed? If not you could consider replacing the windows, although of course there is quite an expense associated with replacing windows. If your windows are double glazed, or if you cannot afford to replace them, or you can't replace them with double glazing, perhaps if you rent the property, or it is a listed building and double glazing would ruin the look of the building, then the next best thing to do is to invest in some good thick curtains. Choose ones that come right down to the floor if at all possible, and for the best insulation get curtains that have a thermal lining. No matter how good your double glazing, some heat will be lost from a room through the window, so drawing these curtains should go a long way to keeping your room warm.
Check your heating system. If you have central heating can you perhaps add an extra radiator into the room? Are your radiators working efficiently? Bleed them, or get a professional to check them out. If you don't have central heating you could consider an electric storage heater, or perhaps underfloor heating. The advantage with underfloor heating is that the heat will be spread across the room rather than being localised as is the case with other forms of heating. Underfloor heating works well under many flooring types, from carpet to porcelain floor tiles. Read more...
