Without a doubt, there are an endless number of details and steps involved with completing large home improvement projects. However, it all starts with your mindset and having a big picture approach. So before you even begin the project, consider these important tips.
1. Establish goals and have a plan. This is similar to developing a schedule, but not exactly the same. Identify your goals - for example, replacing the kitchen counter or changing the living room floor - after which determine all of the steps involved. This will help you know where you need professional assistance, what materials you will need, how long it will take to finish, and if it takes a permit.
2. Acquire the needed financing in advance. Before you begin any part of the project, establish a full budget, including one for urgent cash, which should make up about a third of the full budget for the remodeling. This ensures that you never need to stop because you've used up funds (or place yourself into an uncomfortable amount of debt, for that matter).
3. Clear out as you progress with your demolition. If you have a number of people assisting you, assign some people to getting rid of the demolished materials and others to actually tearing things down. You can switch jobs occasionally to keep up motivation levels. If you're working on your own or with very few people, rip down a certain section and then cleanup before moving on to the next segment. This stops you from having an overwhelmingly big pile of trash to try and move out of the space once you're done. Read more...
