Natural Fibers Used In Carpet
Wool and cotton are the natural fibers used in the carpet.
Cotton: Cotton is a seldom used in carpeting today because it has only fair resistance to wear. Its soils easily lose its appearance rapidly, but the only advantage is that it washes easily.
Wool: Wool is the ultimate carpet fiber, the one that sets the standards for all others. It dyes exceedingly well. Wool yarn is generally a blend of various types of wool to achieve a luxurious natural texture. A good wool carpet, with sufficient density, is expensive, but worth it if is price is not the main concern. A good wool carpet is an excellent buy for long hard wear, and good appearance.
Man-made Fibers: Although, man-made fibers differ gently, they have certain desirable characteristics in common they resist month, mildew and mold, and they are all non-allergenic. They are also available in a variety of colors and patterns. However, they are nor as superior as woolen carpets.
Acrylic: This resembles wool more closely than any other man-made fibers. It is more durable than wood, less durable than nylon. It resists sunfading and water, which makes easy cleaning and rapid drying. It has excellent resilience and crush recovery. They wear well and have good stain and spot removal properties. Acrylic’s colors are brighter than wool’s and are obtainable in all popular carpet styles. They are also less expensive as compared to woolen carpets. Usually modacrylic is added to increase flame resistance. Acrylic carpet can be used wherever wool has always been customary – living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms etc.
Nylon: Nylon is the largest selling of all fibers because of its extra ordinary strength and abrasion resistance and its economy. In wearability, nylon outlasts wool by at least three times. Less ounce weight is required of nylon than of wool because of its high resistance to abrasion. Nylon does not show signs of wear rapidly. It may pill and has the tendency to build up static electricity chargers if no anti-static finish has been applied. Its high bulk, great elasticity, durability, and dyeability make it practical all around. Added qualities like washability and looks, and nylon becomes suitable for every room in the house.
